Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio November 2005

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

It's time for our annual elections. Our November 11 meeting of the Manhattan Amateur Radio Society will be at 7:30 PM at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson in Manhattan. As club participation has fallen over the years, it has been harder and harder to find persons interested in running for office or for committees, so I suspect there will be discussion along this line.

In order to run for office or to vote you must be a current paid member of MAARS. Nominations may be made from the floor and self nominations are allowed. We hope to see you at the meeting.

SECRETARY'S REPORT
Francis Sable, WØEVJ

The Oct. 2005 MAARS meeting was at the Red-Cross building on Friday the 14th. Erin, KBØTXL , conducted the meeting in the absence of Brian, KCØDWX. There was discussion to select a nominating committee for new officers at the Nov. meeting.

Next, was discussion about the previous proposal to pick up the portable antenna tower owned by Kenny, KBØRPV, for the purpose of repairing and repainting it as thanks to him for allowing MAARS the use of the tower on Field Days, etc. Scott, ACØCY, and Francis, WØEVJ, agreed to make arrangements to pick up the tower from Kenny's QTH and deliver it to Fred's QTH, where the repairs will be done. The tower has since been moved to Fred's, KØTCS, location.

There was discussion about the repeater antenna situation. It was voted to expend up to $300 for a new repeater antenna to replace the present temporary antenna if that was recommended by the repeater committee.

Dec. 10 is chosen as the date for the annual Christmas party to be held at the Fred and Nadine residence.

This is to remind you that the Nov. MAARS meeting is scheduled as the annual meeting for the election of MAARS officers. We need to replace at least 2 officers who are resigning their present office position.

The officers of this society, shall include a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Officers are elected by a majority vote for a term of one year. A nominating committee shall present a list of one or more nominations for each office. Additional canidates may be nominated from the floor at the annual meeting. Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged. The election for contested offices shall be by written ballet. Newly elected officers assume their responsibilities at the Dec. meeting, with the exception of the treasurer. The new treasurer takes over within one month after the records are reviewed by the old and new treasurers. Dues must be paid by Nov. 1 in order to vote at the annual meeting.

It was also discussed at the October meeting about updating the equipment insurance values. Erin Crouch volunteered to talk to Mike Moore about the current list of equipment received from the insurance company to try and identify what was up at the repeater. Also Erin would check on the Internet for the value of the current equipment. The equipment list hasn't been updated for about 20 years.

There was also a brief discussion about the possibility of dissolving the club due to lack of interest. No decision was made.

ARRL DUES

NEW FROM ARRL - Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club. This is for new members or those who have not been a member for two or more years. There will be no commission for renewals but we still may submit your renewals, if you wish. Since the club retains the dues, it is necessary for you to write your check to MAARS, and then the treasurer writes a check to ARRL.

MAARS DUES

Dues will be due by Oct. 31 and are: regular membership $20, full-time student $10, family $30. Please complete the following when renewing your membership, even if you did so last year. Return to the Treasurer, at a meeting or to MAARS, P. O. Box 613, Manhattan, KS 66505-0613. If you are currently receiving both the email and paper copy of the newsletter, please consider just receiving the email copy. It will save the club $5-6.00 per year per copy.
