Monthly Newsletter  Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio  April 2007

Brian Carter, KCØDWX

For the March MAARS meeting, the club had the opportunity to see the Riley County Mobile Emergency Command Post. Thank you to Pat and Laurie for providing us with this opportunity.

We have reserved the Poyntz shelter at the Manhattan City Park for Field Day. Field Day will be the 23rd and 24th of June. The cost was $70. This should give us good access to the public for promoting radio.

Also, in the last month we managed to make a good bit of progess on the tower/trailer. Several members got together, and with the aid of Dominic (KCØLKZ) and Joey (KCØSSZ) and their tools, the trailer is assembled and to a point of needing a few finishing touches.

For our April meeting we plan to have Mike Barelli (WØMAF) and Richard Keyes (WB8LCB) to give a presentation on APRS, and other digital modes of operation. I suggest that you attend this meeting if you have any interest in APRS or other digital modes. This should be a great opportunity to learn.

For those of you in WARN, this meeting may be of interest as there are plug-ins available for the APRS software that will display watch boxes as well as radar images on top of the locations of the persons transmitting data through APRS.

I hope to see most of you there, and I can tell you that this should be a very interesting meeting. Hopefully our guests will join us for dinner as well at the Sirloin Stockade. I have set up a list-serv for MAARS and hopefully people in this area interested in amateur radio. To join send a blank e-mail to If you have trouble signing up, e-mail me This list-serv is intended as a way for us to communicate about amateur radio in this area. Feel free to share your suggestions.

NEW FROM ARRL - Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club. This is for new members or those who have not been a member for two or more years. There will be no commission for renewals but we still may submit your renewals, if you wish. Since the club retains the dues, it is necessary for you to write your check to MAARS, and then the treasurer writes a check to ARRL.

Dues will be due by Oct. 31 and are: regular membership $20, full-time student $10, family $30. Please complete the following when renewing your membership, even if you did so last year. Return to the Treasurer, at a meeting or to MAARS, P. O. Box 613, Manhattan, KS 66505-0613. If you are currently receiving both the email and paper copy of the newsletter, please consider just receiving the email copy. It will save the club $5-6.00 per year per copy.
