Monthly Newsletter  Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio  January 2007

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

I'd like to start off the NewYear by thanking The Stueves for a wonderful Christmas party in December. As usual, MAARS members gathered and enjoyed each other's company and food, as well as a gift exchange. Thank you Fred and Nadine for your hospitality.

We have started 2007 off with new ideas and efforts at getting people involved in amateur radio. Members set up at the Manhattan Town Center for ARRL Kid's Day on January 7th. I hope we can continue to make efforts to expose people to amateur radio and possibly interest more people in the hobby.

It also seems that we have started the year off with a slight increase in membership. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

As I'm sure everyone is aware, in the next few weeks Morse code will no longer be a requirement for any class of amateur radio license. I imagine this will spark at the very least an interest in upgrading for those who have not previously done so under the old rules. We will soon be providing test dates for those interested in testing. My plans are to wait until the new rules take effect to avoid the need to charge people a second time for filing paperwork under the ARRL guidelines.

Our January meeting will be held at 7:30 P.M. on January 12th at the Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson, with a 5:30 P.M. eating meeting. As usual, everyone with even an interest in radio is encouraged to attend.

ARRL DUES

NEW FROM ARRL - Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club. This is for new members or those who have not been a member for two or more years. There will be no commission for renewals but we still may submit your renewals, if you wish. Since the club retains the dues, it is necessary for you to write your check to MAARS, and then the treasurer writes a check to ARRL.

MAARS DUES

Dues will be due by Oct. 31 and are: regular membership $20, full-time student $10, family $30. Please complete the following when renewing your membership, even if you did so last year. Return to the Treasurer, at a meeting or to MAARS, P. O. Box 613, Manhattan, KS 66505-0613. If you are currently receiving both the email and paper copy of the newsletter, please consider just receiving the email copy. It will save the club $5-6.00 per year per copy.
